| About the Moes 4 A Cure Fundraiser While the Moes have been known to be a giving team on the ice (as in giving the puck away in front of the net and giving up several goals on the scoreboard), they explored new territory in 2005 as they teamed up to give to charity. After a teammate's 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type-1 (insulin dependent) diabetes, The 16 Guys Named Moe Hockey Club kicked off a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) -- the leading charitable funder and advocate of diabetes research worldwide. Dubbed Moes 4 A Cure (M4AC), the fundraiser's tagline became "16 Moes. 1 Goal... and that's not just a game stat." A self-deprecatory tongue-in-cheek poke at their less than impeccable record on the ice. |

During the month of November (aka Diabetes Awareness Month) the Moes raise money for JDRF by: - approaching friends and family for donations; - imposing a fun "Kangaroo Court"-type system that has players make donations when a "Team No-No" is infringed (i.e. $1 per penalty minute, $2 per missed game, $3 per loss, etc.); - implementing a "Pledge-A-Player Program" that has teammates pledge each other and donate based on the pledged players' point production over the course of the month; - approaching corporate sponsors for cash donations to the charity and/or gift items to be used as prizes or to be put up for auction on the website; and - most recently, holding a Charity Poker Tournament that sees participants showcase their skills at Texas Hold'em while raising money for the charity. The fundraiser has been reported on by several websites and local newspapers. The team's charitable effort also earned them an appearance on the evening news when a cheque presentation during their inaugural event was covered by Toronto television station CityTV. In the five years that the M4AC fundraiser has been held, the 16 Guys Named Moe Hockey Club has raised a total of $36,909 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. |
